Sleeping, Smartphones and... Pokemon?

Do you remember back in 2016, when the entire world seemed to be obsessed with Pokemon Go?

Well a new craze might be just around the corner with the upcoming release of the newest game from those same creators, Pokemon Sleep.

While the goal of Pokemon Go was to encourage children (and adults) to get outside, walk around and explore their local areas, Pokemon Sleep seems to be encouraging a similar healthy lifestyle, but with sleeping. As the Pokemon Company put it, "Pokémon Sleep aims to turn sleeping into entertainment by having a player's time spent sleeping, and the time they wake up, effect the gameplay."

This kind of sleep tracking app is nothing new, and there have been plenty on the market for years. But the added feature of being able to collect cute elemental monsters while getting your nightly rest might give this app a competitive edge. Especially for young people.

However, downloading new software onto your phone is far from the ultimate solution to sleeping disorders. In a study published in Preventive Medicine Reports, the 35 most popular sleep apps were analysed, revealing that less than half of the apps actually offered any information about sleep.

Moreover, less than 15% off the apps discussed any benefits of healthy sleep or risks of sleep deprivation. And with said risks being as serious as stroke and heart disease, it's vital to be informed as to what untreated sleep disorders can lead to.

With Pokemon Sleep not being released until 2020, it's hard to know what kind of effect it's going to have. But considering the immense success of Pokemon Go (well over 100 million users) we're at the very least curious as to how it pans out.
